What you are thinking of is The Interprocess Communications Primer by
Lefler, Fabry and Joy.  But watch out!  Some of the examples in the
listing will compile, but not, repeat *not* run.

Much simpler to understand is _Tutorial Examples of Interprocess Communication
in Berkeley UNIX 4.2bsd_ by Stuart Sechrest.  It can be ordered from:

Be sure to ask for report number UCB/CSD 84/191

The examples in this document are all very straightforward and run
correctly.
