Quite a number of people have been asking for an HP Laserjet/Troff filter. Here it is. Sorta. I have been trying to write one, and have gotten a fair ways, but I've got to do some "real work", so... This software is INCOMPLETE, but does manage to print something sorta useful. At least it understands troff output. Status: 1) Seems to print normal text "reasonably" well. The major difficulty is that I don't know how to set up troff width tables, so I ended up having to use CW. The spacing leaves something to be desired. Laserjet fonts don't work quite the same way that troff expects (eg: glyph origins etc.) 2) it only can print Laserjet EPROM fonts. That is: a) pitch selection is limited. eg: only one. The lroff shell file overrides the default pitch and turns off ligature mode. b) italics and bold work if you have the right font cartridge (I'm using 92286A). c) Not all troff characters are possible. Note: in the mathematics fonts, if you attempt one that isn't supported you will get the "english version". d) full fonts may be impossible due to buffer size limitations on the HP Laserjet. 3) troff does not output page breaks, so the filter has to resort to a kludge to figger out the end of a page (eg: EXACTLY 11 inches of vertical motion). God help you if you change the page size in troff! Also, some of the troff macro packages go to the trouble of emitting cut marks. lcat tries to delete them, but may not always be successful. Files: Makefile (what else) lcat.c fastfonts.c (source for lcat filter) lroff (a shell file that attempts to emulate troff - you will probably have to change some of the paths) test.1 - a sample input for lroff. This was built in the System V universe, and lroff depends upon System V lp. "lp -ob -op" means: "no output translations" whatsoever (it depends on 8 bit character serial transmission) Lcat takes one parameter "-d" - VERY VERBOSE debugging output. I would dearly love to hear from anybody who manages to interface this durn thing to some sort of font library and/or at least gets the spacing correct. I know that this thing is hardly useful, but maybe some troff hackers can figger out how to extend it. Enjoy.... #!/bin/sh echo 'Start of pack.out, part 01 of 01:' echo 'x - lcat.c' sed 's/^X//' > lcat.c << '/' X/* X X Copyright: Chris Lewis @ 1985 X X Author: Chris Lewis X X Permission to copy and further distribute is freely given X provided this copyright notice remains intact and that X this software is not sold for profit.
