[net.sources] Geneology Sources should *not* be posted to net.roots

6243tes@whuts.UUCP (STERKEL) (12/09/85)

<PLEASE NOTE THAT THE FOLLOWING SUGGESTION ALSO WOULD CURE
70 - 90 % OF THE SOURCE AND SIMILAR MATERIAL CROSS-POSTING
CLUTTERING UP THE NET>

>I made an earlier suggestion in net.roots, and net.sources
>that geneology program sources should not be posted in
>net.sources. The basic reasoning was that special interest
>sources belong in the special interest groups, avoiding
>aggrevating the Unixer's and avoiding the "loss" of the
>one source amoung the many.
>
>I now withdraw the suggestion.
>
>It appears that some links do not include special interest
>groups such as net.roots (for instance Europe). In addition,
>keeping all sources in net/mod.sources maintains a managable
>archiving system, whereas encouraging diffusion of sources
>makes a difficult job impossible.
>
>Based on several suggestions (by the way, thanks for the
>mail on this topic). I make the following new suggestion:
>
> Put all sources or pointers to available sources in
> either net.sources (or mod.sources), placing a pointer
> in all applicable special interest groups such as:
>
> NOTICE: SOURCE (REFERENCE) FOR XYZ POSTED TO NET.SOURCES
>
> please note that this is *one line* and not a large drain
> on the net.
