[net.sources] MM, nroff, troff needed for PC

jrm@cblpe.UUCP (John Miller) (10/17/86)

I am looking for a package that is functionally identical to the
MM (Memorandum Macros) package available on UNIX that I can use
on a ATT PC 6300 running MSDOS. I would also need the nroff or troff that the
macros produce code for. Examples of these macros are:

.TL for title of a document.
.P for the beginning of a new paragraph
.H 1 for the beginning of a new header line

Is anyone aware of such a package for the PC that would be available
commercially or otherwise?

I, too, would be interested in having an nroff for the PC. We
do a lot of work on PC's and then move it to XENIX for
typesetting. It would be great to be able to preview the
typeset text on the PC.

Another alternative which we have begun to look at is to
rewrite the PD "roff" program so that the use of the dot
commands is directly parallel to mm/ms or n/troff. The code
is available in C from many BBS's. There are many limitations
with roff and there is no use in reinventing the wheel
however, if a "real" nroff for the PC is available.

Yes, I have had one for a PC for several years although I haven't used
it yet. The package is called "Carousel Tool Book" and works on IBM PC
and compatables. The "toolkit" is a series of UNIX-like tools with one
of the programs being called "format" which is very similar to nroff.
However, you will have to generate some of your own macros to use with "format".
The companys address and phone are taken from the documentation I have:

	Carousel MicroTools Inc.
	609 Kearney Street
	El Cerrito, CA 94530

	415-528-1300

I don't even know if they are still in business...but good luck anyway.

The IBM Users group here in buffalo has what they call 'nroff' and
describe as aUNIX like text editor. It's not 'nroff' and I don't know
how good it might be.

Their board is at (716) 832-1398. You need approval to download but
it usually will not take long.
