a277 2012 29 Aug 82 AM-Mexico Chess,190 American Ties with Yugoslav In Closing Match TOLUCA, Mexico (AP) - Yasser Seirawan of the United States and Krunoslav Hulak of Yugoslavia drew after 57 moves in the final round of the interzonal chess qualifying tournament here. The draw kept Seirawan from sharing second place with former world champion Boris Spassky of the Soviet Union. In another late game Saturday, Yuri S. Balashov of the Soviet Union defeated Andras Adorjan of Hungary in 46 moves after five hours and 20 minutes of play. Earlier Saturday, Lajos Portisch of Hungary and Eugenio Torre of the Philippines tied for first place and qualified to enter the semifinal round next year that will deteremine a challenger for world champion Anatoly Karpov of the Soviet Union in 1984. The interzonal match is one of three such competitions this year. The third will be held next month in the Soviet Union. Zoltan Ribli of Hungary and former world champion Yasily Smyslov of the Soviet Union won the first interzonal match last month in Las Palmas, the Canary Islands. Victor Korchnoi, a Soviet defector now living in Switzerland, and Robert Hubner of West Germany also have qualified for next year's semifinal candidacy round. ap-ny-08-29 2312EDT **********
