[net.chess] castling

wapd (12/03/82)

Out of pure curiousity : when and why was castling added to
the game of chess ? It seems like a very odd, special case (almost
a "hack").

I doubt anybody really knows when and where castling became
a part of the game, but I'm sure it happened something like
this (several hundred years B.C.):

novice: Aha! I've got you. Mate in two.

expert (ashamed at being beat by such an inexperienced player):
Ha! No, you don't. I was expecting that! I'm going
to ... ummm.. err... castle! Yes, that's what I'm
		going to do!

	novice: What??!??

	expert: I told you about that, didn't I? Yes, I'm sure I
		did.

novice: Oh, yeah, \now/ I remember.

Remember that chess started off as a game of royalty, so you might
not argue too long if your opponent could have your head removed.

So, our two chess players spread the word of this new, improved game.
(And then there's warp chess.)
