I must admit, I was surprised too. And that's probably the only reason for that ending: it was a surprise. I agree that Magnum turning vigilante is quite a bit out of character, and I was hoping to see a 'Continued next week' flash by, because I think the story of how he gets himself out of that one could easily be another 2 hour story.
