[net.tv] The Avengers

msc@qubix.UUCP (Mark Callow) (08/31/83)

The Avengers is currently shown on Friday nights on tv20 in San Francisco.
I try not to miss it. They are currently showing the Tara King series.
They show then in a funny order though and sometimes drop back into an
Emma Peel episode.

John Steed (Patrick McNee) has had 3 female partners in "The Avengers"
plus a fourth one in "The New Avengers" where he also had a male partner.

The partners (and actresses) are

Cathy Gale -- (Honor Blackman)
Emma Peel -- (Diana Rigg) -- "Mrs Peel -- we're wanted"
Tara King -- (Linda Thorson)

and in the New Avengers

Purdy ?? -- (Joanna Lumsden)

			   THE AVENGERS

Oh come on, this is too easy.

	CHARACTER STAR
	=========                               ====

	John Steed Patrick Macnee(sp?)
	Emma Peel Diana Rigg

These were the stars during the most successful run of the series.
they starred in the third thru fifth season I believe.

The replacement of Emma was named Tara something later in the series.

Steed's companion before Emma showed up was played by Honor Blackman
(remember Pussy Galore from "Goldfinger" ?) and before her was a man.

(Forget trying to see these earlier episodes, they were done very early in the
life of British Broadcasting, and unless you know of someone who had a reel to
reel video tape machine in England during that time, you can forget it. The
studio didn't save them)

The show progressed from a pair of adventurers to actually having them
work for a government agency headed by "Mother". Of course this was during the
last season.

Steed always used the phrase "Mrs. Peel, we're needed" in various
classy ways at the beginning of the show.

There was a "New Avengers" series a few years back that had Steed.
But this time he had two companions, Purdy something and Nick whatshisface.
It wasn't very good, but Steed was in good form.(It had nice title music
though)A few good episodes, but most of it was mediocre to poor.

I enjoyed the Avengers series, along with "The (original) Saint" with Roger Moore, "The Champions" (what I remember from it anyway< sorry that I didn't remember that the series was in color, but we had a B+W set back then>), "The Man from U.N.C.L.E." with Robert Vaughn, "The Green Hornet" with (who cares about the other guy) Bruce Lee,and other mid-late sixties adventure/spy stuff.

Yes I remember "Secret Agent" with Patrick Magooan(sp?) and loved it.

(Did anyone see the Man from U.N.C.L.E. TV movie? It was fun to see Solo and
Illya again, but wasn't quite up to snuff. BEST SEQUENCE: enter JB !!!!)

Now come on, let's have more obscure trivia questions like:

What were the ID numbers of Napoleon Solo and Illya Kururgyn?
(actually this is pretty easy, but it'll get harder)

		Name the head of T.H.R.U.S.H.

In what episode was the T.H.R.U.S.H. "buster" used? What is
		it?

Who starred in "The Girl from U.N.C.L.E."?

What does S.P.E.C.T.R.E. stand for ?

Everyone knows Blofield heads S.P.E.C.T.R.E. , but in how many
Bond films was his character in? What were the films (in
chronological order of course !)? and WHO played them?

How many 00 agents can you name that were killed in the line
		of duty? WHERE and HOW?

Who was the character of Mrs. Bond?, Who played her? What
happened to her? In what other Bond movie(s) is she mentioned?

NOW we have something to think about !

Ah, The Avengers. John Steed, Emma Peal (sp), after she left, their
really wasn't a show that deserved the title AVENGERS.

An interesting note is that Emma was the one of the first fighting
women on tv. After all, how many times did Steed win a fight? But
who came in kicking and chopping? Emma, that's who.

The show had style, class, excitment, good plots and Diana Rigg was
the first TV start that I ever fell in love with. In discussions I
have had with my friends, I have noted that this is not unique to me.
How many others of you out there lusted after Mrs. Peal?

				Not ashamed to admit it,

The replacement for Mrs. Emma Peale was Tara KING.

In The New Avengers, Steed's companions were Purdy and GAMBIT.

And now for a shot at the trivia questions (but I admit I can't get
most of them).

The Girl from U.N.C.L.E. was played by Stephanie Powers (I think).

Blofield was the central villian in ON HER MAJESTY'S SECRET SERVICE
and DIAMONDS ARE FOREVER. He was played by Telly Savalas in the former
and by some English stage actor in the second. Incidentally this
second actor, whatever his name is, also played the narrator in
ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW.

Mrs. Bond was played by Diana Rigg (she was busy back then) in
ON HER MAJESTY'S SECRET SERVICE. She got wasted by Blofield
just as she and Bond were driving away from their wedding.
She was also mentioned by Barbara Bach in THE SPY WHO LOVED ME.
As soon as Bach mentioned Bond's wedding she found that she
struck a nerve in Bond's memory.

That's my best shot.
And now for a little trivia of my own.

In THE NEW AVENGERS, Purdy was played by the actress Joanna Lumdsey(sp?).
In what Bond flick did Lumdsey have an extremely short appearance?

In THE AVENGERS, what was Mother's handicap? (physical not golf)

Where did the secret entrance of U.N.C.L.E. move to in the tv movie of late?

Back to THE NEW AVENGERS, in what other famous British series did the
actor who played Gambit star in?

What other British suspense type series did Robert Vaughan star in?

Come on Keith, I know you can do it.
