Of course the name Loudon Wainwright III sounds familiar. Who could forget the big summer hit of 1972 titled "Dead Skunk in the Middle of the ROAD". For those of you whose memories need jogging, here's a portion of the song (yes, I know this is net.tv and not net.music, but the question was asked here). Crossing the highway late last night He didn't look left, he didn't look right He didn't see the station wagon car The skunk got squashed and there you are (chorus) You got your dead skunk in the middle of the road dead skunk in the middle of the road dead skunk in the middle of the road And he's stinking to high heaven. Makes about as much sense as suicide is painless. John V. Smith

Another snippet from a Loudon Wainright III song, called "Swimming Hole", I think: "This summer I swam at a swimming pool, and a reservoir to boot; at the latter I was informal, at the former I wore my suit, yeah, I wore my swimming suit!" By the way does anybody know if LW III is the son (or grandson??) of the Loudon Wainright who writes editorials/commentary for Life Magazine? I assume he is related, after all, how many Loudon Wainrights can there be? Bob Schleicher Bell Labs, Naperville, Ill.

Actually the song that I will always remember LW III for is the one which went "when I die I'll get the last laugh on you." With the rousing chorus: HA-HA-HA-HA (ha-ha-ha-ha) HO-HO-HO-HO (ho-ho-ho-ho) CHUCKLE-CHUCKLE-CHUCKLE-CHUCKLE (chuckle-chuckle-chuckle-chuckle) SNICKER-SNICKER-SNICKER-SNICKER (snicker-snicker-snicker-snicker) GUFAW-GUFAW etc. He sang this song in the closing of one of the shows. LW III played Capt Spaulding a few times (three shows I think) and also sang the song Toyko on the show. HE DID NOT WRITE SUICIDE IS PAINLESS!!!!!!!!! OZ seismo!rlgvax!oz
