[net.chess] tournament

So far I have the following list of people interested in
starting a postal chess tourney:

Including myself, there are nine people so a four round swiss seems
to be the way to go. In a few more days I will send mail to all these
people with information about the first round. Before we start though
I would like to hear comments/suggestions about the length of time
alloted for people to receive moves. I am beginning to think that
this tournament may carry on for a long time.

Charles Ditzel is also arranging the tournament,
soI hope that we will coordinate our efforts.

I mailed out a letter to everyone who responded to my origonal suggestion,
although not all of my letters made it through.

If somebody out there knows how to avoid 'Undeliverable Mail' messups,
please let me know. I haven't mailed over the net before.

I encourage anyone interested the postal chess tournament to contact
Lance as I am not organizing one. My interest is in **playing**
in the postal tournament. Also anyone having easy access to the
game scores of the upcoming KORCHNOI-KASPAROV semi-final match **please**
post them on the net as this is certainly something of interest to all
of us net.chess.

I got on this list recently and yours was the first message I got.
Would it be too late to join the tournament? However, I would like
more information on this first.

Thanks,

How is the tournament going. My opponent tektronix!james are having
trouble sending mail to each other, and after a couple of months
our game has only gone as far as 1 e4 e5; 2 bc4 nf3. How are the
other games going? Other people having problems?

My game with Gary Mager is progressing at a good clip. We are at move 30.
Hopefully the communications problem that Brian spoke of are not the rule.
Although I am having a terrible time trying to communicate with lance
(the tournament director) as both my messages have been returned.
I am proposing that when the players complete their games - send the
results to lance...include the game scores (which will be posted). Though
this is not cast in concrete yet...hopefully lance will concur (remember
I'm having this mail problem). The idea is to put the games into a 'digest'
that players can look at prior to playing there next opponent.

and...hey, 2 moves????? You guys have time to write a few chapters on
each individual move at this rate. Just kidding.

My tournament game also died after two moves due to loss of mail
contact between my opponent and I.

I'm not sure what the problem is communications-wize but...
is it possible two have the two players post something of
general interest on netnews and then use the "r" option of
readnews to send moves back and forth?

I don't know if that will work but it may be worth a try.

The other solution maybe to use net.chess (I think I hear the inferno
already...flames...flames)under the subject:game - name1 vs name2. People
could then skip over these. I doubt some people would like this so try
solution one and if it fails maybe you can look at the second idea.

I have had problems, too. I contacted several people who seemed
interested in playing chess on the net, but lately I haven't heard
from them at all (including Lance). If any of you are out there,
please write! (decvax!dartvax!rccall)
