It just so happens that in the episode that was on TV here in New York
last night at 11 was another episode in which Hawkeye salutes. It was
one of the early ones. The episode is based on Captain Jonathan Tuddle,
an imaginary doctor that Hawkeye invented.  The "Tuddle" had not
gotten 14 months pay, so Hawkeye collected the money and gave it to
Sister Theresa's orphanage.  When the General came to give "Tuddle"
accomodations, Hawkeye made up the story that he died jumping out
of a helicopter.  After he gave the Eulogy (Sorry about spelling)
he saluted.
