[net.tv] Video Product Availability

jvs@iwu1d.UUCP (10/25/83)

I was recently informed that anything I ever wanted to see (movie-wise anyway)
could be seen by buying or renting a VCR and renting anything I wanted at any
local video store. There are many old movies and things that I would like to
see. And I'm a little tired of waiting and hopeing that someday they might
be on the late, late or very, very early show on TV, or that they might show
up at a movie house that shows old movies.

Now this idea is appealing, but is it for real. At first it seemed to make
since. But the more I thought about it, the more it seemed less likely. I
would'nt mind renting movies or old TV shows (I don't think I would ever really
buy very much), but could I really get what I want? What if what I want is
really obscure? In many cases, I'm the only person I know who has ever heard
of some of this stuff, little loan likes it. I keep thinking that video stores
are like record stores. They only have what's popular or what has been popular.
This idea makes sense. If a movie was say, a real dog, nobody liked it, and
it doesn't have cult status, why should it be available? Also, say a movie
is from the early 50's and isn't a well known classic, why would a video
store have it or be able to get it. Now people in stores seem like they'll
tell me anything to get me to buy their machine or join their tape club. So
I really don't trust anything they might tell me.

I'm interested in what you people in net-land have to say about this. What
have your experiances been like? Can I really get "whatever" I may whant to
see? Comments and stories please. I don't to make a big investment and not
get what I want.
