What long-time personality on M*A*S*H appeared in a single episode in a cameo
appearance as a different "single episode" character before he joined the cast
as a regular? Obviously it could not have been Hawkeye, Hot Lips, or
Father Mulchahey.
a] What is the stage name of the actor or actress?
b] What cameo appearance did they make in that single episode?
(A description of the character is sufficient. I can't even remember their
M*A*S*H name, but the nature of the character is unforgettable as they were
central to that M*A*S*H episode.)
c] What ultimate *major* role did that individual permanently fill?
At the time of the cameo appearance, I doubt anyone anticipated that this
individual would later have a major regular role in M*A*S*H. It is a little
disconcerting however when you see this individual in the rerun of this old
M*A*S*H episode.
Of course, it may turn out that I learn some more M*A*S*H trivia if turns
out that more than one M*A*S*H regular predated his permanent role with a
cameo appearance as a different character.
a M*A*S*H fan forever,

I'm not sure if there were others, but Harry Morgan appeared as the lunatic General Steele, before he returned as Sherman Potter. "He made me polish the bottom of my boots!"
