Three correct answers received so far, so might as well post it. Harry Morgan (I sometimes make a Freudian Slip and call him Henry, but he was the band leader) played General Barton Hamilton Steele who was looney, crazy, (senile?) and was the presiding officer of the court at a court martial of Hawkeye Pierce for insubordination. His main witness was a black helicopter pilot. When called to testify, the General wanted the pilot to first sing him a little tune because the General knew that all blacks were born with the inate ability to sing. Of course, this quickly ended the court-martial proceedings against Hawkeye. We all know that Harry Morgan became Col. Sherman T. Potter. This is a very funny episode and one of my favorite reruns.
