If you have a chance, try to see recent editions of Not The 9 O'Clock News (or buy an album of the show). It's a BBC-TV production, which is close to an 80's Monty Python and has a lot to say about the British music scene (which is why I've posted this to net.music as well as net.tv). Two music- oriented sketches come to mind: - An interview with Marc Almond (not really) of Soft Cell, satirizing his lip syncing... of course, his lips don't keep in sync with what he is saying. Worse, the tape slows down, and speeds up, without warning. Once, it stops; he tries to get an answer out to the interviewer's question, but the tape isn't moving-- so, panicked, he nods his head. It ends by the interviewer asking if he really is the self-indulgent annoying little twerp that everyone says he is. The tape repeats "bollocks" at various speeds, ad infinitum... - A "video", with a song full of "art-rock" cryptic, obscure, incredibly pretentious lyrics, lots of very expensive-looking video production effects and exotic sets, and a delightful chorus: "Nice video, shame about the song". p. rowley, U. Toronto P.S. It's playing all this week, at about 11:10pm, on TVOntario.
