I believe that Dr. Smith was not supposed to go on the trip with the Robinson Family, he somehow came along for the ride. If anyone could elaborate on the subject, I'd be happy to know also. John Cabell ...decvax!dartvax!johnc

I remember seeing a "first episode" where they dealt with the reason Dr. Smith was there. He was there to sabotage the mission, but due to his bungling; was forced to stay on the ship. His added weight changed the ship's trajectory calculations which threw them off course. In fits of trying to change things he managed to screw them up so badly that they couldn't get back home. Eventually he found the controls to wake the people up and were they *pissed*. I think that was the pilot for the show. --JSol

Dr. Smith was unable to get off the ship. His original objective was to reprogram the robot to destroy the Jupiter II's inertial guidance system and life support system after 8 hours in flight. He would have gotten off the ship in time if the Alpha Control personnel hadn't come back on ship and moved the robot back to his pedestal. Dr. Smith then stayed behin and reprogrammed the robot, but had to hide from Alpha Control personnel again. When he came out of hiding, the final countdown had already started and he could not get out. --greg (decvax!genrad!mit-eddie!gds, gds%mit-eddie@mit-mc)

I believe that Dr. Smith was on board before the launch in an attempt to sabotage the mission. I don't remember why, or who he was working for though. ... uw-june!eli

#R:bbncca:-28500:hpfclk:11700005:000:1215 hpfclk!mike Nov 11 09:04:00 1983 Dr. Smith was not supposed, nor did he want to go to Alpha Centuri with the Robinson family. Several hours prior to launch he entered the Jupiter 2 and programmed the 'Environmental Control Robot' to destroy the ship sometime after liftoff. However, Dr. Smith, being the sort of man that he was, decided that he had time to take a quick nap before the launch. So he pulled out a store away cot on the ship and went to sleep. He did not awaken until just before lift off, and it was too late for him to get off the ship. He decided he would steer the ship back to earth and played with some controls which sent the ship into a frenzy. Finally, he used a laser pistol to blast open the suspended animation pod that Major West was in. At about that time the Robot starts to go nuts, following Dr. Smith's original sabotage orders (This eventually forces the Jupiter 2 to land for repairs in a latter episode). The ship is off course, badly damaged, and the Robinson family has the bad luck of dealing with Dr. Smith for the next three year's worth of episodes. Michael "Warning!
