columns of dull unanimated uniformed drogs file down endless corridors; grey, bald, monotonous, slowly streaming into a large auditorium to see Big Brother rambling on a 40 foot high crt. But a strong young blond girl with a sledgehammer flies down the hallowedways, chased by a squad of sturm troopers. She races into the screening room (in slow motion) , whirls around, and sends the sledgehammer into the crt, which explodes(?) into the gapping faces of the bedulled audience. Not the latest Sci-Fi Flick, but an advertisement for the Apple Macintosh. For 60 seconds it certainly grabs your attention. I saw the end of it during the 6:00 news 1/19/84, and a 15 second one later in the show. It's a very glossy add, and might give the cute humor of those Chaplin adds some competition. Of course it is a bit depressing to see our products advertised like cars - and I hate to think how much R&D the commercial money could have bought. stephe sutor

Today's New York Times advertising column says the MacApple "1984" ad used 300 "extra's" for the crowd in gray & cost $400,000 to film. Most amazing of all, it will be run less than 20 times. Mac ad budget was given as $25M. PCjr is budgeted for a $40M introductory campaign.

I went to see Gorky Park (yes they dragged me away to see ti before it hit the VCR and it was worth it) and between the preview of coming attractions and the feature presentation they played the LONG version of the MacApple Ad. I was realy surprised when the end came, for I thought it was an upcoming sleeper movie ad. But lo and behold, it was the ad...I was flabbergasted (sp). I think roughly one-third of the movie house cracked up when it became apparent it was an ad, and the rest thought we were wierd. Walt Pesch AT&T Western Electric AT&T Technologies ihnp4!ihuxp!wbpesch
