[net.tv] Prisoner query

wildbill@ucbvax.UUCP (William J. Laubenheimer) (03/14/84)

A friend of mine is interested in the answer to the following question.
Perhaps some car buff in net-land can supply the answer.

In the television series ``The Prisoner'', what make, model, and year of car
is Patrick McGoohan driving in the opening episode?

Reply via mail, please. Thanks in advance!

What car was McGoohan driving?

I believe it is his own homebuilt Lotus, but I don't know anything else about
it (and my Prisoner information packet is lost in my library room at home).

If my memory serves me correctly it was a Lotus Seven and one of the
earlier aluminium bodied examples too. Later models were fibreglass.
The 7 was a basic engine and 2 seats sports car. It had no
creature comforts but it was *fast* (0-60 in 4.7s). It didn't
really have any seats either, just padding on the floor and back of
the tub.

Lotus dropped the Seven when they went upmarket. A company called
Caterham bought the moulds and, as far as I know continues to produce
the car. However Seven afficianados generally agree that the
'glass models are vastly inferior to the original aluminium variety.

The car that 'Number 6' drives in the opening sequence of 'the Prisoner'
is indeed a Lotus. It is a 'Super Seven', which I believe was sold
as a kit (perhaps it still is -- I see ads in Autoweek) for a while, as
well as fully assembled.

Be seeing you!
