I haven't verified this yet, but it appears that the real reason the change from KNXT-TV to KCBS-TV took place may be that a Bay Area radio station (KCBS-AM) apparently dropped that callsign, freeing it for KNXT-TV to use. I don't think that the delay in applications under the old FCC rules had anything to do with it. If that's all that was involved, KNXT-TV would have filed the application twenty or more years ago and would have long since gotten the change approved. Can someone in the SF Bay area fill us in on the status of KCBS-AM? Did they change affiliations or formats? Any information would be appreciated. --Lauren--

9 April 1984.
I vaguely remember that KCBS radio was the O&O in San
Francisco (this was twelve years ago, hence the foggy
recollection). If anyone up in the Bay Area can say what
happened to it, allowing (old) KNXT-TV to take over the call
letters, I would appreciate it.
Curiosity impells me to ask: Why didn't KNX radio change
its call letters to KCBS?

# Yes, KCBS-AM is still on the air here in the SF Bay Area, and, apparently, still CBS O&O'd. Incidentally, KYA-AM @ 1260 KHz (one of the few 3-letter stations left) recently went away and became KOIT-AM or something else very muzak-like. Tragic. The KYA-AM call letters no longer exist. (these are SF Bay Area stations).
