[net.tv] "The First Olympics"

Well, I don't know about truth in the series, or much about sports, but I
can tell you that I liked this a heckuva lot better than anything I've seen
on the tube in the last few months (certainly "The last year" in terms of
specials and mini-series). Wonderful characters, great script (as far as I
could tell, it never flagged for a minute, which is INCREDIBLE in these days
of regulatory boring romantic twaddle... this had a bit of real romance),
fine photography, good music, and a very wry sense of humor ("You Aussies
are a cocky lot." "Must be something in the beer... sir."). Also, one has
to be impressed with dedication that many of the people in the series had to
"The Olympic Ideal" (something which is not yet a trademark of 7-11),
especially in these days of rank commercialization and political
squabblings; the greek who wins the marathon, and turns down the money,
really was an example of how things should be. I hope this series was based
on fact as much as I'd like to think it was; it would give me a much better
impression of human nature, something which has been shrinking rapidly for
the last 18 years.

If it comes on again this year, see it... I think it's worth a second watch.
