[net.tv] HSB Location

ewf@ihuxr.UUCP (Gene Foster) (02/22/84)

I stand by my original statement that HSB takes place in Pittsburg
PA. The Hill is an area of Pittsburg. The opening scenes were
supposedly shot in Pitt. Also one more key point. The front
license plates are missing from the cop cars. In what states is
this legal? Well PA is one of them, also FL is another. Anyone
know of any more? Pittsburg, PA is the answer, period! This should
conclude any more discussion on this subject. Let's go on to
something more interesting like What are the names of Trappers
daughters or how Hawkeye got his name.

Wrong "dog breath"-:), the Hill is modeled after Fort Apache in
the South Bronx. Famous in song and legend for its characters
and ambience. There even has been exterior shots of the station
from time to time. There are a number of shots of Chicago also.
Granted, there are also exterior shots of Pitt and Philly and
several other cities. But, it remaineth to say that there is
only one Fort Apache and that is in the good ole Sout Bronex.
Don't go there unless you are are in a party of not less than
200 brave souls.

Seriously folks. HSB is a composite of several eastern cities,
as far as the opening shots are concerned. The rest of the shots
are LA and environs. Remember Bumper Morgan of Blue Knight fame?
Some of the same street scenes are in both HSB and BK. They are
shooting some location shots this week in some eastern city BTW.
It was reported in the paper that some big REAL crime took place
just a block from HSB shooting. I don't even remember now which city.
But, it wasn't Pitt or Philly.

I don't know about all of the opening scenes, but at least one is an
aerial view of an RTA train backing into the Chicago North Western
station in Chicago. I rode that damn train every weekday & I *know*
the curve it snakes around. The squad cars are similar to Chicago's &
the beach could be on Lake Michigan. I remember Bochco saying in an
interview that the city wasn't definite.

pat@ih1ap.UUCP (Patrick A. Fargo) (02/24/84)

Channel 7 news in Chicago recently did a piece on Chicago scenes
used in TV. One of these episodes showed the filming of HSB in Chicago.
They select very dismal, snowless days, and use the Maxwell Station
as the base. Although the HSB producer trys to give the city no
identity, the exterior sequences are definately shot in Chicago.

<Why am I responding to this notestring? I don't even
	 watch network television>

A single license plate (on the rear) is standard in most
states in the midwest and west.

jsv@brunix.UUCP (Jeff Vitter) (02/29/84)

That's not true about single license plates.
Louisiana is the only state that I know of that still uses
only one license plate per car.

jsv@brunix.UUCP (Jeff Vitter) (02/29/84)

Clarification: In every state I know of (except for La.),
almost all cars have two license plates.
Some states like RI and Mass. do not require two license plates
per car, but just about every car has two license plates.
No car in La. has two state license plates.

I've just been corrected. A single license plate is standard
in many (not most) states in the west and midwest. Illinois
is not one of them. I was grown in Indiana, and we just get one.

In Tennessee, they only use ONE license plate (on the back) and its
been that way for at least 20 years.

O.K. folks, it is time to find out the REAL loaction of Hill Street
BLues. All this talk on the net has brought us out of the woodwork. Are
you ready?

Hill Street Blues is located in Socorro, New Mexico.

Yes, Socorro, New Mexico (pop. about 10,000). We all felt that it was
time to reveal ourselves to the world. I know you're all disappointed that
it wasn't located in your home town, but you can't have them all!

Socorro, located in the middle of New Mexico (and the middle of nowhere)
is the perfect spot for HSB to do their filming. There is no crowds, it is
quiet, and is conviently located only 1500 miles from Hollywood, 1000 to a
nearby shore, and only 50 miles from any form of civilzation. The snow in
the beginning of the show was brought down from the near by ski slopes, and
the cars with the liscense plates missing were part of a deal by the U.S. and
Mexico. We buy Mexican oil, and the Mexicans give us back all the cars they
stole. A good deal. Hope that solves everyones queries!

Well, my parents' cars, my brother's car, my sister's car, and my car
just have one Indiana plate, and we haven't been stopped
or charged with a violation, and they just send us one plate
each year, so my gut feeling is that Indiana only requires the
one plate. Anybody else live in a state where one plate is
standard?

I also hear that cops only need one plate in many states that otherwise
require two.

PA issues only one plate for cars and motorcycles, however I've seen State
Police vehicles with front AND rear plates on the marked patrol cars.
Unmarked and detective vehicles still have only one plate.

Massachusetts has been in the process of phasing out double plates for
some time now. Newly-issued plates are all single; when existing double
plates expire, they are replaced by single ones.

BTW, is it true that Illinois and Mississippi are the only remaining states
that issue new plates every year (as opposed to semi-permanent plates
with renewal stickers)?

johnnyr@ihuxa.UUCP (John R. Rosenberg) (03/08/84)

Illinois has been using license plate stickers for the last 3-5
years. They have however just designed a new plate that anyone
ordering plates recieves.

La. received its statehood not long after the La. Purchase.
(I hope the msg I'm replying to wasn't serious.)

La. (not LA - Los Angelas) is Lousiana the state of; just east of Texas.
You know, the state with New Orleans, home of the Mardi Gras, the Superdome,
and the Cocaine Saints. Get with it.

For those who care, and I don't: PA has only one license
plate. Never had 2, never will.

Why are we discussing license plates in net.tv?

You haven't been to Pennsylvania lately, have you?
I lived there for about 18 years, and still visit
there several times a year, and they have always
had only one lisence plate per car (naturally
mounted on the back bumper).

This sure has gone on long enough but... I recall seeing several movies
and TV shows where cars not only were missing the front license plate, but
the rear as well. They removed them to hide the identity of where the
filming takes place.

A single license plate is also used here in Massachusetts,
but I don't think this has a thing to do with television.
