[net.tv] New FCC Unrules

wetcw@pyuxa.UUCP (T C Wheeler) (06/28/84)

So, the FCC has gone and done it. They have removed the limitations
on how much advertising can be shown in any one hour of programming.
I shudder to think how this will effect some of our smaller stations
here in the NY metro area. If things weren't bad enough during the
showing of some late movies, now we will be getting 2 minutes of
the film and 15 minutes of commercials. This one stinks. What the
government giveth with one hand, it taketh away with the other. They
have reduced government interference on one hand, and set us up for
commercial abuse with the other. Ain't deregulation weird?

If the TV stations can broadcast as many minutes of commercials per
hour as they like, then there seem to be only two things for the
consumer to do: either complain to the FCC when a station comes up
for renewal, or try to videotape most of what you watch and then
zap the commercials, most of which are insulting to one's intelligence.
I will opt for the latter solution.

Note: this posting may be offensive to people in the advertising
business. I sincerely hope so.
