Well, I watched this willing to believe that this would heavily satirize the average image of award ceremonies... or at least be more entertaining. It was, but not by much... as to be expected, MTV was so busy lauding itself that it took time out for few moments of pure entertainment. Below are scrawls which I found on my notepad the next morning; your opinion of their worth cannot be lower than mine, but maybe they will strike a common chord if anyone else saw them: HOSTS: Dan Ackroyd is a fine comedy writer (witness GHOSTBUSTERS), but as a performer... I winced a lot watching him bring out routines that were stale five years ago. Bette Midler, I expected more out of. Perhaps the fun of watching her on a more straight-laced show is that you are never sure just how far out-of-bounds she is going to go (her appearance on the Oscars several years back rates as my number one favorite awards presentaion speech). Here, though, the prevailing mood was "anything goes", and she actually seemed rather mundane when compared with the likes of Cindy Laupner. She did improve. ---- DAVID LEE ROTH: This guy is hilarious! Was he in "This is Spinal Tap" or "Fast Times at Ridgemont High"? He should have been.... ---- THE TECHNICAL AWARDS: Huh. Apparently, credit where credit is due does occur sometimes. ---- THE POLICE: It's always nice to see that people who do good lyrics and good videos are actually funny/witty/pleasant on stage. ---- Can Herbie Hancock walk on water, too? ---- VIDEO AWARDS WE'D LIKE TO SEE by Midler & Ackroyd WAS funny; I particularly liked the idea of "Video most resembling a jean's commercial". ---- THOM McCAHN? Ack ack ack... ---- One wonders how much Levi's has offered to Bowie for the rights to his Blue Jean music... ---- After cross-referencing my information about recreational drugs and their side effects, I'm still having trouble finding anything that could be responsible for the terminal airhead condition of Nina Black. It must be genetic. ---- Why did Z.Z. Top's video remind me of a car ad? ---- Actually, I agreed with most of the awards (strange...). Except the Police won NOTHING for "Every Step You Take". *sigh* -- probably too highbrow... ---- CLOSING: a) The midget was in bad taste. b) I didn't know IBM was sponsering this show... whoops, my mistake. c) "Due to my strong personal convictions..." We know, Michael, We KNOW! ************************************************************************** "The more you drive, the less intelligent you are." Moriarty, aka Jeff Meyer John Fluke Mfg.
