I can picture exactly what the conference at NBC which spawned this series
looked like:
"We need something fresh & original."
"RIGHT, BRANDON! (in chorus)"
"So lets do a cop show..."
"RIGHT, BRANDON!"
"...with a guy who looks just like Clint Eastwood..."
"RIGHT, BRANDON!"
"...and who acts just like Dirty Harry!"
"OOOOOOH, WONDERFUL, BRANDON!"
"And we'll give him a tough woman partner..."
"RIGHT, BRANDON!"
"...except she's not really tough, 'cause she's a woman..."
"RIGHT, BRANDON!"
"...and they can go around shooting criminals and bring justice
without worrying about petty techicalities like warrents and
Miranda cards and logic and detective work..."
"Hmmm... this sounds like a good thing to get from the creators of
the A-TEAM!"
"Good idea, Harvey! You're now vice-president of creative
programming! Except, that's Mr. Tarketoff to you."
"RIGHT, MR. TARKETOFF!"
----
Actually, this would be fun if it was treated like Batman... The scenes with
Hunter playing Mr. Unstopable are pretty funny ("Say, did you want this guy
stopped?" {said individual is bearing down on Hunter & partner in gigantic
Ford car} "That would be nice..." BLAM BLAM BLAM SCREEEE CRASH BOOM
KA-BLAM). But they have to give 'em dialogue, which really ruins it. And
it sets TV's image of women back... about three months (this is TV,
remember). Anyway, thumbs down, except for certain NRA members.
PS: In-Joke for watchers of other (better) Stephen J. Cannell productions...
detective in squadroom mentions to Hunter that he arrested a relative of
Hunter's the previous night (Hunter is supposed to be the only law & order
dude in a family of gangsters). The incarcenated cousin is refered to as
Crazy Tommy T, a criminal so psychotic he was featured in both THE GREATEST
AMERICAN HERO and TENSPEED & BROWNSHOE.
Just another garden-variety Communist dupe...
