[net.tv] Censoring of Cheers

ewf@ihuxa.UUCP (Gene Foster) (09/28/84)

Last night while watching the opening show for Cheers, I was amazed
to find that NBC censored the dialogue in two spots. Both were
done in the scene with Coach, Diane, and Sam talking in the bar.
Was this just my local Chicago NBC affiliate (WMAQ) or did everyone
in the US get the shaft? I really would like to know what was
said but thanks to NBC I'll probably never find out. They ought
to censor the entire A team along with St. Nowhere if it were up
to me.

I was watching the show in Phil. Pa.
And the censoring was done, I thought that the reception
crapped out, but maybe not!!!

DOES ANYONE KNOW WHAT THE DIALOG WAS????

If one is referring to two period when the sound went out,
then the "Censoring of Cheers" also happened in Denver, Colorado.
I had thought that there was a problem with the network feed
(which it looks now may be intentional) or with transmission from
the local station (seems unlikely now).

WNBC out of New York also censored it. If the network
censors disagreed with the dialogue, they should have
sent the show back for appropriate editing.

But the real question is does anyone know what the missing dialogue was.
I tape Cheers and I think that the first missing line, has Sam calling
Diane a 'bitch'. I ran the tape in slow motion and his head is turned a bit
but I THINK that's what was said. The next cut piece is very long and i cant
tell what was said.

ANYBODY OUT THERE KNOW!!

I, too am very interested in finding out what the censored dialogue was
in the season premiere of 'Cheers.' Unfortunately I didn't tape it so I've
been hoping that someone who had who be able to dope it out. There has to be
someone out there that has friend who is deaf that might be able to read
Diane's lips. Or maybe there is someone from NBC on the net. I'm going crazy
here!

It also went out in Boston. I thought the first time was censoring,
but the second time was so lengthy, I figured they were having trouble
with their audio.
