[net.tv] Indihra Ghandi's Funeral

inc@fluke.UUCP (Gary Benson) (12/21/84)

Well I am *PISSED* about the cavalier handling of this event by American
television. A major world died, and we got 20 minutes of coverage at
2:00 a.m. Oh sure, we got the 5 second spots on the evening news, but very
little meaningful commentary.

Ghandi, an undisputed master of diplomacy, bound the Indian continent as a
nation. With all the cultural variety imaginable just teeming in her land,
she has shown the way for the India of tomorrow. People, we are not talking
about the relative importance of this murder vs the story of the regularly
scheduled US elections. What is at issue is that the woman was one of the
most insightful politicians of her day, and her death was treated by the
American broadcasters as less worthy of air time than some born-again
preacher, or "The Morning Stretch".

It's just pitiful to me that in this freest of countries we bind oursleves
into ignorance and ethnocentrism.
