[net.tv] British Rock Satire

jimc@haddock.UUCP (02/04/85)

It was called "Rock Follies" and starred Rula Lenska, Julie
Covington, and Charlotte Cornwell. It was made in 1976, though I
think it was shown in the United States later than that, and they
made a sequel called "Rock Follies of '77." Record albums were
made of both (I have them; they're not fantastic, musically, but
as reminders of the shows, they're pretty good.)

I am sorry if I am repeating any of the information, as I have not seen the
original posting. But here goes....

The music was written by Andy MacKay ( of Roxy Music ).
The *band* that the women were in was called "The Little Ladies". The story
was about the way the rock business operates, the explotation of the unwary,
backbiting, hype, unscrupulous management, moneygrabbers, sex, drugs etc.

After the shows had aired in England, a group of three women came forward
and claimed that they had told their story to a producer from a television
company (London Weekend Television if memory serves me right), hoping that
they could *star* in a program about their experiences. They, apparently,
were given *the brush off*. They alleged that their *story* had been stolen
and they were not given credit for the storyline (or more important -
royalities). I think the courts ruled in their favour and they did recieve
a cash settlement. The only thing they didn't get was the *push-to-stardom*
that Rula Lenska, Julie Covington, and Charlotte Cornwell recieved.

Rula Lenska did a lot of commercials for hair products (she had/has a great
mass of *flaming* red hair) and pursued her acting career, all be it minor
roles in tv programmes.
(I belive there were a lot of "Who is Rula Lenska" T-shirts sold in America
which followed up a certain ad campaign)

Julie Covington followed a musical career. I think she was in Evita. I do
know that she had a number one hit in England with "Don't Cry For Me
Argentina". Apart from releasing an album, I know of nothing else she has
done since

Charlotte Cornwell pursued an acting career in the theatre, though I did see
her once on the television in a similar role as the one in Rock Follies.

I will admit to following Rock Follies when it was shown in England.
I enjoyed it, I thought the majority of the songs were great. (I don't know if
I would hold the same opinion now, as I haven't heard the songs for years, my
cassette tape got chewed-up in the tape recorder). The acting was a little
*over-the-top* but, as far as my assosociation with the music industry went,
(I worked with several network radio dj's and a few *top* groups whilst
working with mobile discotheques over a nine year period) could be very true
to life. I am not saying that every one I came into contact with were as the
programme portrayed, but a small number certainly were, and thankfully, an
even smaller number were worse!

In 1978 she sang on Jeff Wayne's War of the Worlds.
