[net.tv] Cagney and Lacey

daves@hp-pcd.UUCP (05/08/84)

Original actresses in the series: Tyne Daly and Meg Foster!!!

Question: does any one out there (other than myself) remember Meg Foster?
What other TV shows or movies did was she in? I remember watching an
entire episode of the (terrible) 6 million $ man to watch her play
a copper skinned alien.

I think that "Cagney and Lacey" is getting orders of magnitude better
every week; anyone else out there share my opinion? I'm sorry I didn't
respond to the TV poll, considering how far down it was. With each
episode we get inside these two very complex women (and their cohorts,
to a much lesser extent); I can hardly wait to see the new sides of them
each week.

The thing that first enamored me to this show was the surprising
elements of their personalities. Mary Beth Lacey looks and sounds
tough, what with thick Brooklyn accent, and I had never expected her to
be the sensitive one; the same is true of her husband. Christine, on
the other hand, is beautiful, but she's the tough, cold one who is
unlucky in love; it's a whole new side of Sharon Gless, at least for me.
I don't think I've ever noticed Tyne Daly before, so I certainly can't
make any similar comparisons for her. The two of them work together and
complement each other so well; they are the best team since Hawkeye and
Trapper.

Cheers again to CBS for bringing this wonderful show back. I didn't
watch it religiously before it was canceled, but now I make sure I see
it (I now have a VCR, so I never have to miss it for any reason); I
guess this is the problem that caused it to be canceled in the first
place.

Who were the orignal actresses that
played the parts of Cagney and Lacy for both the movie and the
TV show? I know Loretta Swit played one of the parts in the movie.
Also, I recall there was a big conflict when one of the actresses
was replaced on the TV show because she was deemed too tough for
a female role. Did Gless or Daly replace her?

Don't you remember Tyne Daly as Clint Eastwood's partner in Magnum
Force (or one of those Dirty Harry movies). Harry gets "stuck"
with her for a partner, she saves his life, and gets blown away in
the process. He gets really PO'd, and proceeds to blow the bad
guy off the face of the earth (but you knew that was going to
happen, didn't you).

I don't watch CAGNEY AND LACEY as a rule (though I have seen an episode here and
there), but I can answer part of the question, anyways. Tyne Daly (Dirty Harry's
partner from THE ENFORCER) and Loretta Swit were the duo in the pilot movie (I
can never remember which one is Cagney, and which one Lacey). When the movie
proved successful enough to warrant a regular show, Swit was unable to reprise
her role because M*A*S*H was still going. I don't recall who took up the role
of whichever one it was that Swit played. Yes, supposedly, the network dumped
whomever this was because she looked "too butch" or some such nonsense, and
Sharon Gless got the part. Tyne Daly has stayed in her part since the beginning.

Original Actresses (at least, in the pilot): Tyne Daly and Loretta
                                                            Swit.

Original TV series actresses (i believe) were Tyne Daly and Meg Foster
(great eyes). Foster was dropped, reportedly, because of a lack of fan
appeal.

I am an avid "Cagney and Lacey" fan. I am surprised to see there
is virtually no discussion of the show on net.tv. Are there "Cagney
and Lacey" fans out there in net land?

(I just saw Barry Margolin's comments on the show and I was not only
pleased to find another fan on the net, but a fan who is male. The
men I've talked with in this area atleast seem uncomfortable with the
show. I suspect it has something to do with women being portrayed in
a different light (i.e. capable human beings). :-) I'm very curious
to see how men perceive the show, and women too for that fact.)

Fan talk:
Wasn't the episode where Christine got shot played marvelously?
I thought the relationship between Cagney and Lacey was played to
the limit (and to perfection!). I was especially impressed by how
the writers and actresses handled the problems both Cagney and Lacey
had in dealing with the shooting. I guess that's what keeps me
coming back - not so much what happens in the show, but how these
marvelous characters react to it. It's definitely a program with
   heart.

I didn't start watching "Cagney and Lacey" until the end of the season
so I never saw the original actresses or show, but I can't think of a
better pairing than Sharon Gless and Tyne Daly. (By the way, did anyone
catch Sharon Gless in "Hobson's Choice" with Richard Thomas on the tube
a few months back? I loved it.)

The first C and L episode I saw was the rerun of the one about the
bag lady and it affected me very deeply. Just thought I'd mention it
because it is being shown again this coming Monday (atleast in this area,
around Portland, Oregon) and I'd highly recomend it.

                  Cagney and Lacey forever!

Did you see Cagney and Lacey last night(2/4)? It had a rather unusual
moral for a Hollywood story.

Detective Chris Cagney and victim Joe Citizen are the only witnesses willing
to testify against bad guy Moe Mugger. Joe, who is prohibited by New York
law from carrying a sidearm, is murdered in the street. Chris, with her
.357, is safe. But when her purse is stolen, leaving her helpless, Moe moves
in for the kill.

Were the Hollywood political commisars caught napping? Or is CBS just trying
to pacify Jesse Helms?

Let's clear up a couple of things here: Joe Citizen was not killed on the
street, he was mugged and stabbed by Moe Mugger. Chris probably saved his
life by her quick reaction to the screaming of some spectators. Joe Citizen
was willing to testify against Moe, until Moe threatened him. Joe was
terrified and fled the hospital, his apartment, and the state, probably!

I thought the moral was pretty clear...the public wants to be protected but
they are not willing to do their part (ie, testify against criminals) and then
complain because there are so many criminals on the street. The story showed
more of Cagney's character, too. She was acting tough and was trying to hide
the fact that she was scared by this lunatic and resented what he was doing to
her life. I don't understand what this has to do with "Hollywood political
commisars" or "Jesse Helms".

Reminds me of one of the better bits on Hill Street Blues. At the end
of the show, Frank fumes about people carrying guns to "protect"
themselves. Joyce (one of the two token liberals) looks at him very
quietly, and when he finishes says "I know. But I've started carrying
	one too."
