One of the local Seattle stations is having the syndicated run of THE GREATEST AMERICAN HERO, and they're getting down to the last few episodes. I believe that several of them were never shown on network TV, as the series was cancelled before they were shown. However, the episode I saw last week, where Bill is believed to be dead and is in reality shipped to Mexico for use in genetic research experiments (I just love realistic plots), had the feel of one of those "farewell" episodes, where the creators and actors know the show has been cancelled, and are putting (at least) a bit more care into the shows. This one had several nice touches: Ralph flying with Pam (a nice take-off on the flight scene in SUPERMAN), selections from Bill's diary of the trio's career, and a bit more character definition. Several cracks were made at Cal Worthington (ANY crack at Cal Worthington is appreciated by me). Also a very good script, by the shows standards (most of the good scripts occured during the first and second seasons; they'd really been going downhill during the last season). The 2-minute wrap-up at the end of the show was filled with references to previous shows ("BURGER ALERT! BURGER ALERT!" and Bill eating Purina milkbones). Oh, and the director was a frequent HILL STREET BLUES contributer. Does anyone know if this was the "last" show? All in all, a very good capper to a show which was very good about 1/3 of the time, and good 1/3 of the time. And almost always entertaining.
