Miami Vice: At first it appeared that the show wouldn't live up to the
high standard set by its pilot. But as the season went along,
the direction and emphasis seemed to become much more consistent.
I think the show is best when it combines
i) a few "music video" sequences
ii) flashy cinematography
iii) the seamy side of a vice officer's job
I recently read in a magazine that the producer's spent $70,000
in wardrobe for the pilot alone. (The two stars enjoy wearing some of
the latest French and Italian designs.) Don Johnson on a recent talk
show stated, "I get to wear a $7 t-shirt with a $700 Italain jacket."
St. Elsewhere: Cynthia Sykes (Annie Cavanero) is leaving the show because
she felt that the writing for her character (and women in general) on the
show was very poor. Even though I think the show may be the best on TV
right now, I'd have to agree with that assessment. Most of the female
characters (Kim Miyori, "Shirley Daniels", "Kathy Martin", "Joan Halloran")
haven't been portrayed in a very favorable manner. Earlier this season,
the writers wanted Ann Cavanero to have a lesbian affair with a visiting
doctor but Cynthia Sikes nixed that script line. Since then her character
has been barely visible. Presumably, she hasn't been on the best of terms
with the production team since that incident. It really is unfortunate
that this happened. During the show's first season, her major plot line
centered around her trying to balance her (very demanding) job and her
hopes of having a family. I believe she even turned down some type
of appointement or honor because it would've totally domminated her life.
This plot line was never followed up; it was never resolved.
