[net.tv] More Walks Down Cartoon Nostalgia Lane...

moriarty@fluke.UUCP (Jeff Meyer) (02/24/85)

Don't worry, folks, I'm not starting a net poll on cartoons...

I enjoyed EIGHTH MAN and (to a much lessor degree) GIGANTOR, but if I had to
give a list of favorite shows, it'd be:

1) EIGHTH MAN

2) ULTRAMAN, which combined the attractions of cheap special effects and
   Saturday Night 'Rasslin...

3) COOL McCOOL ("DANGER is my BUSINESS" "That will never happen again,
   Number 1...")

4) KIMBA, THE WHITE LION ('Nuff said)

5) STINGRAY, a Gerry and Sylvia Anderson Marianation production (I
particularly liked the city which went underground, and the villain's
   fish-shaped subs...)

6) UFO ("This is S.I.D., Space Intruder Detector...").

7) And, of Course, STAR TREK... (But that's not a kidee show!)

I'll bet someone's going to flame about the cartoon content of this
newsgroup soon, but I must say I'm enjoying the nostalgia very much...

I would like to add "Top Cat" to the list. Is this being shown anywhere?
I'd love to see some of the episodes again.

And, does anyone remember, which cartoon came first: the Jackson 5ive (as
it was spelled) or the Osmonds (I'm not saying they were good, just want some
info)?

Oh, yes, STINGRAY! I remember enjoying the great theme music,
and Marina, the mermaid. The series had some great dramatic and
romantic plots. Wasn't there a relationship between Marina and
	one of the STINGRAY captains?

Hear, hear! Does anyone, I'm counting on you Lauren, have the lyrics to this
one? Who were the voice for Top Cat, of course who were the members of the
gang. All I can remember was Benny and Officer Dribble. My guess is that
Top Cat was supposed to be Phil Silvers (I don't mean the voice, I mean the
character). Ah back when cartoons were GOOD!

I just checked and found that Top Cat is no longer running here in
early mornings. However, I have some info from memory. TC was
definitely a satire of Phil Silvers, though the guy who did the voice
was not Phil. One of TC's gang was voiced by a very familiar character
actor who shows up frequently in commercials. He's the one who
plays the "sun" in a raisin commercial and says to a lawyer,
"How'd you like to get a nice 2'nd degree burn?"

And it was Officer Dibble, not Dribble. Though TC probably called
him Dribble from time to time as a joke.

As for the theme, I don't have it on tape, but I can pull forth some
of it from memory, with gaps:

---

Top Cat!
The most (gap) Top Cat!
Whose intellectual close friends get to call him T.C.!
(missing)

Top Cat!
The indisputable leader of the gang!
He's the most,
He's the tip,
He's the championship!
He's the most Tip Top (ta ta ta ta) Top Cat!

P.S. Think of the RNA and neurons being wasted remembering
      stuff like this.

From THE COMPLETE DIRECTORY OF PRIME TIME NETWORK TV SHOWS 1946-PRESENT:

TOP CAT

Broadcast History: 9/27/61 - 9/26/62 ABC Wed 8:30-9:00

Voices:

Top Cat Arnold Stang
Benny the Ball Maurice Gosfield
Choo Choo Marvin Kaplan
Spook/The Brain Leo DeLyon
Fancy-Fancy John Stephenson
Officer Dibble Allen Jenkins

"Top Cat was the sophisticated, opportunistic leader of a pack of
Broadway alley cats. Their homes were well-equipped ash cans, they made all
their phone calls from the police phone on a nearby pole, got their milk
and newspapers from nearby doorsteps, and ate scraps from the neighborhood
delicatessen. Their only problem was Officer Dibble, the cop on the local
beat. He did his best to control them but seldom succeeded.

"Reruns of TOP CAT aired for several years on Saturday Mornings- on ABC
from October 1962 to March 1963 and on NBC from April 1965 to May 1969."

Seems that there were several cartoon shows in the '60s that were
kiddified versions of prime-time sitcoms. Examples:

The Flintsones The Honeymooners
Top Cat Sgt. Bilko
Calvin & the Colonel	Amos and Andy (anyone else remember this one?)
 (were there more?)

Later on, of course, the studios went in for more direct
adaptations such as "Brady Kids" and "Star Trek".

BTW, isn't that supposed to be "Officer Dibble"?

(why do I remember all this crud?)

We get Top Cat re-runs on a local station on Sunday mornings, and
my 15-month old daughter sometimes give them a glance while she's
playing. We've been considering getting a kitten, so I asked
Kristin what she'd like to name the cat. (Not really expecting an answer,
as she was only 15 months, and had only been talking single-words for
a little while). She immediately yelled, "Top! Top!" It took me a while,
but I finally figured out she wants to name the cat Top Cat! This
sounds just perfect to me. Next thing you know she'll be asking for
"Benny! Benny!".
