I am looking for some information about the hour long versions of Twilight Zone. I realize that only a few episodes were made. I would like to know how many and what their titles are. When were these shows made? Were hour long episodes only made for one season? Thanks, John.

The hour long episodes were all in one short season (the next to the last season of the show). They were mostly pretty poor, and the show went back to 1/2 hour for the last season. I have them all listed in my Twilight Zone Episode Guide -- but I don't have it online right now (perhaps someone else does? It was pretty widely distributed). There were a couple of hour long shows with some redeeming value, but that was about it. "Printer's Demon," starring Burgess M., was one of the decent hour episodes. For a very long time the hour episodes were not in syndication, but that is no longer the case--virtually all of them are now available for syndication buys. --Lauren--

When were these > shows made? Were hour long episodes only made for one season? > Here in Portland, Oregon, one of the local television stations shows the hour long episodes on Saturday night (prior to the 11:00 showing of the traditional half-hour episodes). Yes, there weren't that many of them, and I have probably seen most of them by now. I believe the Twilight Zone had hour-long episodes for one year, the 1962-63 season, if I remember correctly. The reason for going back to 1/2 hr shows after this year of hour episodes (TZ lasted until 1965, when it was cancelled) was that while the plot lines made nice 1/2 hour episodes, the television programming powers-that-be thought that making the show an additional 1/2 hour added too much fluff to the basic story line and was costing viewership (i.e. - they moved back to the formula that worked). BTW, TZ was on from either 1958 to 1965 or 1957 to 1965. -- Walt

<bug eater line> No, the Twilight Zone was *not* on from '57 or '58; it ran five seasons, so if it ended in '65, it couldn't have started earlier that '60 (or possibly '59). Also, "the networks" didn't have much say in it; Rod Serling himself wasn't pleased with the one-hour format, and strongly advised going back to half-hours. -- -Bernie Roehl (University of Waterloo) ...decvax!watmath!wateng!broehl

Expires: Sender: Followup-To: Keywords: [] That was "Printer's Devil" with Burgess Merideth, *not* Printer's Demon. You've been around UN*X too long...
