This is in response to the discussion about the meanings of The
Prisoner. In my estimation, this series has meanings that could
be interpreted on nearly every level possible.
I feel that the show is about our society. The main theme deals
with conformity to society. The individual is presented as a rebel.
This is true until the final episode where the truth is revealed.
The individual is not a rebel but a ruler. Think about it.
Number 1 is the ruler of the society (the Village). But the number
one represents the unique or the singular. Number 1 represents the
individual. In a society of conformists, the individual will be the
one to lead. I believe that Number 1 is not a person but a group of
people. It could be used to represent government. Any individual is
part of Number 1. This explains the ending where No.48, No.2 and No.6
are all individuals. In a sense, they all are part of Number 1.
About the door closing at No.6's flat. This reinforces the idea that
the Village represents society. They are no longer in the Village,
but the same problems still face them, namely conformity.
My favorite part of the final episode is the song about the bones.
This also represents the idea of many things contirbuting to the
whole. Just as many people comprise a society.
I could go on for days but I will stop here. I am sure there will
be disagreements with my opinions. Please tell your opinions.
I am sure that everyone is inerested in hearing other ideas.
