[net.tv] Bochco Quits Hill Street Blues

Some disturbing news from the Associated Press, printed in the
San Francisco Chronicle (3/21/85):

Steven Bochco, co-creator of NBC's "Hill Street Blues" and the
man who guided the police show to an unprecedented 25 Emmy
awards, said yesterday he is leaving the show after being asked
to resign as producer by MTM Enterprises.

"I'm leaving the show and MTM as soon as I complete this season,"
said Bochco. "I was asked to leave by MTM. I don't know the
reason. You'll have to ask them."

There was no comment from MTM Enterprises. There was no comment
    from NBC.

The Buffalo News, which first reported Bochco is leaving, said the
direction of the show will be taken over next season by Jeffrey
Lewis, David Milch, and Gregory Hoblit, all part of the present
    production team.

The newspaper speculated that "Hill Street Blues," which has
declined in the ratings amid charges of stagnation, may replace
some of its characters. The award-winning series has had few cast
changes since its premiere in 1981.

I believe, from all accounts, that Bocho left because he had been
overspending on each episode of Hill Street. While the fate of the
show is left in a rather precarious position, I feel better that Milch
& company are being left in charge; they have been involved in the
majority of the scripts of the last 3 seasons.

Of course, the rumor of some characters leaving seems disturbing (and
rather unnecessary; St. E. has gotten by by having actors once featured
in the credits appear in semi-regular "guest roles"). The last episode
had Belker only appear for 30 seconds in the epilogue, and Hunter only
in the roll call. Oh, well, we can only hope...

"Calling J-Man Kink. Calling J-Man Kink. Hash missle sighted, target
Los Angeles. Disregard personal feelings about city and intercept."
