Well, here it is, what you have all been waiting for, the results of the What's Worth Watching on Television Poll!!! I'd like to thank everyone who responded, I received 40 answers. I plan to have another poll toward the end of the season to see how much things change. I originally asked for pollees to list their five favorite current TV shows, listing them in order of preference. I received a number of answers which listed five shows, without numbering them. I assumed these to be listed by favorite first, then second favorite and so on. One person sent a list of five favorite shows, and specifically stated that they were in no particular order. I gave each of these shows a third place vote. In addition, others voted for less than five choices. (One person voted for their 2nd through 5th favorite show. They said *nothing* was good enough to be number one this season.) This is why the vote totals do not match the number of people who voted. Two different sets of rating are posted. The first is sorted by points, using five points for first, down to one point for fifth. The second is sorted by total number of votes received for that show. The numbers in parenthesis next to the total votes are how many votes were received for each place. For example, Hill Street Blues received 94 points with 26 total votes. (8 people picked it as their top choice, 8 picked it as second, 4 picked third and so on.) When shows are sorted by points, ties are broken based on the number of votes received. And when the shows are sorted by votes, ties are broken based on the total points received. In a nutshell, the results show that net-people believe that Thursday nights should be spent in front of the television, watching NBC. The net's opinion is that NBC currently has the highest quality programming. This was no surprise to me, due to the leanings of previous postings. In my opinion, the major surprise is Family Ties. I never expected it to do so well. The other interesting thing to look at is Night Court. Our poll certainly supports the network notion that a good time slot will help the ratings. EVERYONE who voted for Night Court also voted for Hill Street Blues or Cheers as well. Only two of the eight Night Court voters put it higher than both Hill Street and Cheers. (Hmmm, maybe even Dreams could survive in that time slot. :-)# This poll again proves that the net is NOT a microcosm of the USA. (The net.politics poll had Walter Mondale winning with 60% of the vote) I know these results do not match the Neilson's (I wish St. Elsewhere was ranked that high!) I've seen weekly Neilson ratings, but I couldn't find overall ratings for the season so far, if somebody has access, I'd like to see a posting comparing our poll with them. Enough analysis, here are the results: Rank Name Network Points Votes 1 Hill Street Blues NBC 94 26 (8,8,4,4,2) 2 St Elsewhere NBC 62 16 (6,6,2, ,2) 3 Cheers NBC 57 20 (2,4,6,5,3) 4 Family Ties NBC 46 15 (3,3,3,4,2) 5 Cosby Show NBC 35 14 (1,3,3,2,5) 6 Cagney and Lacey CBS 31 9 (3,1,3,1,1) 7 Remington Steele NBC 24 7 (2,2,1,1,1) 8 Night Court NBC 19 8 ( , ,3,5, ) 9 Call to Glory ABC 19 5 (3, , ,2, ) 9 Miami Vice NBC 19 5 (3, ,1, ,1) 11 Murder - She Wrote CBS 17 6 ( ,3, ,2,1) 12 Kate and Allie CBS 15 6 ( ,1,3, ,2) 13 Dynasty ABC 13 3 (1,2, , , ) 14 60 Minutes CBS 12 6 ( , ,2,2,2) 15 Airwolf CBS 12 4 (1, ,1,2, ) 16 David Letterman NBC 11 3 (2, , , ,1) 17 Newhart CBS 8 3 (1, , ,1,1) 17 Rumpole of the Bailey PBS 8 3 ( , ,2,1, ) 19 V NBC 7 5 ( , ,1, ,4) 20 Knots Landing CBS 7 3 ( ,1, ,1,1) 21 Dallas CBS 7 2 ( ,1,1, , ) 21 It's your move NBC 7 2 ( ,1,1, , ) 23 A-Team NBC 6 3 ( , ,1,1,1) 24 Saturday Night Live NBC 5 1 (1, , , , ) 24 Scarecrow & Mrs. King CBS 5 1 (1, , , , ) 26 Jessie ABC 4 2 ( , , ,2, ) 27 TJ Hooker ABC 4 1 ( ,1, , , ) 27 Ripley's Believe It/Not ABC 4 1 ( ,1, , , ) 27 Brain PBS 4 1 ( ,1, , , ) 30 Falcon Crest CBS 3 2 ( , , ,1,1) 31 Dr. Who PBS 3 1 ( , ,1, , ) 31 Five Mile Creek Disney 3 1 ( , ,1, , ) 31 Gimmie a Break NBC 3 1 ( , ,1, , ) 31 Highway to Heaven NBC 3 1 ( , ,1, , ) 31 Hot Pursuit NBC 3 1 ( , ,1, , ) 31 Paper Chase Show 3 1 ( , ,1, , ) 37 Three's a Crowd ABC 2 1 ( , , ,1, ) 38 Benson ABC 1 1 ( , , , ,1) 38 CBS Evening news CBS 1 1 ( , , , ,1) 38 Finder of Lost Loves ABC 1 1 ( , , , ,1) 38 Magnum PI CBS 1 1 ( , , , ,1) 38 Masterpiece Theater PBS 1 1 ( , , , ,1) 38 Nightline ABC 1 1 ( , , , ,1) TOTAL VOTES 591 196(38,39,44,38,37) Rank Name Network Points Votes 1 Hill Street Blues NBC 94 26 (8,8,4,4,2) 2 Cheers NBC 57 20 (2,4,6,5,3) 3 St Elsewhere NBC 62 16 (6,6,2, ,2) 4 Family Ties NBC 46 15 (3,3,3,4,2) 5 Cosby Show NBC 35 14 (1,3,3,2,5) 6 Cagney and Lacey CBS 31 9 (3,1,3,1,1) 7 Night Court NBC 19 8 ( , ,3,5, ) 8 Remington Steele NBC 24 7 (2,2,1,1,1) 9 Murder - She Wrote CBS 17 6 ( ,3, ,2,1) 10 Kate and Allie CBS 15 6 ( ,1,3, ,2) 11 60 Minutes CBS 12 6 ( , ,2,2,2) 12 Call to Glory ABC 19 5 (3, , ,2, ) 12 Miami Vice NBC 19 5 (3, ,1, ,1) 14 V NBC 7 5 ( , ,1, ,4) 15 Airwolf CBS 12 4 (1, ,1,2, ) 16 Dynasty ABC 13 3 (1,2, , , ) 17 David Letterman NBC 11 3 (2, , , ,1) 18 Newhart CBS 8 3 (1, , ,1,1) 18 Rumpole of the Bailey PBS 8 3 ( , ,2,1, ) 20 Knots Landing CBS 7 3 ( ,1, ,1,1) 21 A-Team NBC 6 3 ( , ,1,1,1) 22 Dallas CBS 7 2 ( ,1,1, , ) 22 It's your move NBC 7 2 ( ,1,1, , ) 24 Jessie ABC 4 2 ( , , ,2, ) 25 Falcon Crest CBS 3 2 ( , , ,1,1) 26 Saturday Night Live NBC 5 1 (1, , , , ) 26 Scarecrow & Mrs. King CBS 5 1 (1, , , , ) 28 The Brain PBS 4 1 ( ,1, , , ) 28 TJ Hooker ABC 4 1 ( ,1, , , ) 28 Ripley's Believe It/Not ABC 4 1 ( ,1, , , ) 31 Dr. Who PBS 3 1 ( , ,1, , ) 31 Five Mile Creek Disney 3 1 ( , ,1, , ) 31 Gimmie a Break NBC 3 1 ( , ,1, , ) 31 Highway to Heaven NBC 3 1 ( , ,1, , ) 31 Hot Pursuit NBC 3 1 ( , ,1, , ) 31 Paper Chase Show 3 1 ( , ,1, , ) 37 Three's a Crowd ABC 2 1 ( , , ,1, ) 38 Benson ABC 1 1 ( , , , ,1) 38 CBS Evening news CBS 1 1 ( , , , ,1) 38 Finder of Lost Loves ABC 1 1 ( , , , ,1) 38 Magnum PI CBS 1 1 ( , , , ,1) 38 Masterpiece Theater PBS 1 1 ( , , , ,1) 38 Nightline ABC 1 1 ( , , , ,1) TOTAL VOTES 591 196(38,39,44,38,37) Network Points Votes NBC 401 128 (28,27,29,22,22) WOW!!!!! Well, here it is, what you have all been waiting for(?!?), the results of the What's Worth Watching on Television Poll!!! I'd like to thank everyone who responded, I received 57 answers. I plan to run this poll again this fall after the new fall shows get a chance to establish themselves. (If I get bored I may run it this summer to see how the second season shows are doing.) I originally asked for pollees to list their five favorite current TV shows, listing them in order of preference. I received a number of answers which listed five shows, without numbering them. I assumed these to be listed by favorite first, then second favorite and so on. The ratings are determined by points received. A show ranked number one received five points, and shows ranked fifth received one point. The numbers in parenthesis next to the total votes are how many votes were received for each place. For example, Hill Street Blues received 100 points with 28 total votes. (8 people picked it as their top choice, 10 picked it as second, 4 picked third and so on.) Ties are broken based on the number of total votes received. To conserve on space, any show which received fewer than five points was dropped from the listing, but was included in the network totals. Also for the network totals, the shows are listed by what stations they are usually found in the United States. So, Dr. Who is listed as PBS, and Dangermouse as Nickelodean. The number in parenthesis next to the name of the show is that shows ranking (if any) in the previous poll (last October). In addition, the top ten shows from October's poll are listed for comparision.
