[net.tv] Sorry Mr. Letterman

Well folks, I'm usually one of the more fervent David Letterman fans
around, but last night (Tuesday) he did something which REALLY
irritataed me.

If you didn't know already, Eric Clapton was on the show, playing with
Paul and the band. There is no complaint with that! What really pissed
me off was the fact that they never let the man play for the
television audience! We were stuck with hearing the beginnings and
ends of songs which the guys played during the commmercials. I mean
hell, David says that EC is going to be on the show, so I tune in to
hear him, and I barely get the chance. Oh, the pity of it all ....

HEAR HEAR ! I think we should get Dave an account with access
to the net and let him know that we're all pissed off!

I have the feeling these people don't watch too much
Letterman. To begin, this is NOT a musical variety show,
it is a comic variety show. Second, if you will pay
close attention to the members of the band, you will
note that 3 out of 4 nights, there is someone guesting
in the band. Sometimes they are NAME players, sometimes
not. Letterman, to my knowledge, has never featured
the band guests unless they were sit-down guests also.

I, for one, would rather have it this way. If you had
noticed, while DL was in LA, there was a guest band
member every night. Only one was introduced, Van Halen.
The same thing happens on the Carson show with not
as much regularity, but it happens. If the guest happens
to have a name most people will recognize, they are
introduced and take a bow. Otherwise, they go unoticed
except by the folks who do recognize them.

Saturday Night Live has guest bands. How many times have
you retched when some of them came out to play. They could
well eliminate the guest bands on SNL as most of them are
terrible anyway. I think DL does a good job not letting
the show become a showcase for some artist pushing their
latest album. Keep the comedy. If you want to enjoy te
music, get tickets and listen during commercial breaks.

Letterman has some of the biggest names in jazz and R&R sitting in with
his band from time to time. Sure, he has lesser knowns sitting in from time
to time, and I don't care to see them, but when Eric Clapton sits in (and he
never makes TV appearances), I would LOVE to hear him play something, especially
when he is announced in advance as being a special guest on the show. While
I am not a Van Halen fan, I would have even enjoyed seeing 1 song from Eddie.
It seems that the artists who do get to play are the jazz artists, and while
I like to see quality musicians, I prefer R&R...and they get relegated to during
commercials only, and the interested fans get to see 5-10 sx before and after
the commercials.

As a matter of fact, I like most of Paul's arrangements, and wish that every
now and then Dave would let him play one of his own arrangements of an oldie.

P.S. Has anyone besides me noticed how appropriate the Letterman Show's bumpers
are? (Bumpers are the still photos they use before and after commercials.)
If you look at them right, they are very funny!

I resent this comment... I, for one, am a Dave fanatic... I can't get
enough of the man, BUT!!! I am very upset at the way he handled the
guest musicians. Dave, to me, has always been someone who kept all
the cards on the table... he never pulled garbage like that. Some
of my friends (devotees also) tuned into Dave the night of EC with
extra special devotion... only to get nixed. We enjoy the music of
EC very much, and listen to it all the time... and we hoped that when EC
was on Dave, we would have a chance to "talk" to EC... but no go!!!
I still love Dave, but even a parent must rebuke his/her child every
now and then... Dave, if you ever do that again!!!

p.s. next week (June 3 - June 6), Dave will be broadcasting his first
5 shows... all I ask is that they should be in black and white,
after all, these must be from the late 50's :-)

I totally agree. When I heard Clapton (Behind The Sun is a
great new album!) was going to be on Letterman, I tuned in only
to be similarly disappointed when Dave didn't interview him.
And a couple of days ago, Smokin' Joe Walsh was on. This time
he interviewed Joe for a whole 5 minutes!!! Maybe Dave needs
to get a nice LOOOOONG petition requesting him to pay a little
more attention to the guest musicians.....
