A while back, one of my all time favorite series, "Twelve O'Clock High," returned to the air after 15 years or so. Being about 11 when the show was originally on, I had wondered how my adult self would like it. So far, it has been excellent. The show as a gritty, realistic feel that is lacking in modern shows. Being in black and white probably helps (I'm a sucker for b&w), but just recently, I realized what makes it that way... most of the dialog is NOT "looped." For those unfamiliar with the term, most shows (and movies) today re-record the dialog (and sound effects) over the original film, which, to me, cuts down on the image of spontanaity (sp?) as it eliminates the incidental sounds. For instance, in 12O'CH, you can hear the leather jackets creak as people move, and desk chairs squeek a bit when people sit down. Not to mention footsteps when people walk. I realize some shows are filmed "live," but those always seem more like plays than reality. Maybe the incidental sounds are what make "classic" shows "classy." Comments?
