MIDAS VALLEY - A Brief Review
So you're not into oil? "Dallas" isn't for you. Never been to Denver?
Forget "Dynasty." The winery business doesn't enthrall you? Don't watch
"Falcon Crest" either. But...

Last night ABC showed a made-for-tv (read "pilot") movie called
"Midas Valley." Finally there is something for us computer-users to relate
to. Romance, scandal, espionage, all (supposedly) in the lush setting of
Silicon Valley, USA.

Our hero Josh Landau and his old friend, Brad Turner, have a start-up
company, Lantern Computers. They already have a very sensitive Government
contract, and consequently are the targets for greedy and evil people who
are being financed by some Japanese competitors. Landau's mentor, Hubbard,
one of the founders of "Midas" Valley, has a son whose fiance is falling
for young rich and handsome Josh. Meanwhile, our hero is getting the cold
shoulder from his mentor's daughter, Lillian Hubbard, who is manipulating
partner Brad. Meanwhile, the sister of a farmer who is trying to save his
orchard from being turned into concrete and steel is coming on to Josh.

Our hero is nearly perfect. Josh flies his own little experimental
plane, drives both a sportscar and a vintage Mustang convertible, doesn't
get outraged when his partner steals his girl, and avoids getting seduced
by the farmer's sister. He buys out an old boy's robot firm for a good
price, so as not to look bad (even though it is a trap. The bad guys are
going to use the aging roboticist to do their dirty work). But, alas,
Josh is enchanted by the lovely neuro-surgeon, Ruth Lacey (???), soon to
marry Hubbard's son. But she is being blackmailed by someone. And is
she a split-personality type? And Lillian Hubbard wants to get in on the
espionage deal with her boss, who is running the scheme. Revenge for Josh,
who didn't even know that he had gotten her pregnant one summer?

At the end of the "movie" (pilot), Hubbard has a heart attack while
flying his plane, the farmer helps Josh get him out of the plane, and in
the hospital Josh is caught holding hands with the lovely neuro-surgeon.
Stay tuned for the next episode of...

If you're into soaps, or just want a bit of an escape from what life is
really like in the industry, go ahead. Watch it once. I am presuming, of
course, that it will be a series. And maybe you'll get hooked...

Well, this is all well and good, but I want to know the REAL steamy stuff!
Will Josh fall for the vixen-like charms of the 8066, instead of using his
head and going with the virile 68000? Or will he be decieved my the
vaporware Amiga? Stay tuned, sports fans...
