[net.tv] Seatbelt use

ned@scirtp.UUCP (Ned Robie) (08/27/85)

It seems to me that with all the hype about seatbelt use, the major
networks would at least set a good example on TV. It seems they
used to. What happened?? Do they think it takes too much time or
looks corny to use seatbelts on TV?

Amanda King, on "Scarecrow and Mrs King", always wears her seatbelt. I
think that the folks on "TJ Hooker", and maybe also Cagney and Lacey,
also wear their seatbelts. So, it isn't completely unheard of.

I think there was an attempt to convince the makers of "Mickey
Spillane's Mike Hammer" that Hammer should use a seatbelt, but the
makers felt that it would be out of character (not "macho").  Too bad;
it would be great if a macho hero would wear his seatbelt in order to
convince viewers that it isn't a sign of weakness (just as ten years or
so ago it was common for macho types to cry once in a while, as a sign
of the "new masculinity").
