As long as we are receiving the Championship Final games weeks ahead of published analysis I thought it might be interesting for some of us to undertake a look at play to this point. My try: Game 3: Smyslov Plays the Cambridge Springs! I thought my eyes were deceiving me when I read over the score of this game, but lo and behold, Smyslov has revived one of Euwes old pet lines. (and an old favorite of mine!) It appears Smyslov must have been trying to avoid the regular lines of the QGD but may have been suprised by Kasparovs handling of this line. I can find no references to Kasparovs 10. Bd3, it this a TN? ECO gives 10. e4 Nc3,11. bc3 Ba3,12. Rb1 e5,13. Bd3 Re8, 14. O-O b6,15. Qe2 Bb7,16. Rfd1 (Euwe with a plus for white). In some lines black grabs the a pawn and white is pressed to show sufficient compensation for it. Smyslovs 13... Rd8 looks like a boner, but his peices are tied up (typical of this opening!) and lack places to go. I think he was lost at this point, and maybe he should have grabbed the a pawn at move 15, if so Ne5?! looks strong! I don't think we will see this line played again! Comments? Daniel F.
