[net.tv] Spenser for Hire: book to TV

moriarty@fluke.UUCP (Jeff Meyer) (09/23/85)

Very quick review: actually, the actors fit the parts pretty well,
though Urich isn't quite as quick on the quips as I think Spenser
should be, and the woman playing Susan is a bit too coy. Avery
Brooks is AMAZING as Hawk, and Richard Jaekel is good as Quint.
However, who decided to make Frank Belson a over-eating cretin?

However, most of the quips I found amusing (especially during the
fight scene with Chuck Conners at the end) were straight out of
Parker's _Promised_Land_, and some of the introspection Spenser
goes through just doesn't do well on the screen (God help us if they
decide to do _Looking_for_Rachael_Wallace_ (nah, too
controversial)).

Still, with Parker not writing for the TV show, you can expect the
writing to go straight downhill by next week (though I'll check...).
And the flops just keep on keepin' on...

"I have no talents. I have genius or nothing. But all
genius is distorted, even my own."
