[net.tv] Premiere: Amazing Stories

Well, fun to watch, but not all that amazing -- seemed to be a
rehash of most of Spielburg's major themes (`Death, the Suburbs
and Everything', including in-jokes about products like Mr. Coffee).
Still, entertaining enough, and a half-hour show is difficult to get
impatient with, as opposed to a one hour show. This seemed to be
pretty much a one-shot with Spielburg doing everything -- I look
forward to some other people taking the tiller. Final analysis:
mediocre this time, but deserves another shot.

Few notes: Nice John Williams score, and the computer animation
is good, though I liked the new Twilight Zone intro better (though
it's supposed to be spookier anyway). Noticed that the special
effects were done by Dream Quest, the Cal Worthington of special
effects, as opposed to ILM; pity, because I understand there's a
neat computer-animated Ghost Train sequence that was cut from
the _Something_Wicked_This_Way_Comes_ movie that would have
fit this very well...

Anyone want to place bets that the episode we are seeing brief
clips of on commercials, with the boys saying they've contacted an
alien from another planet, is by Joe Dante (_Explorers_,
_Gremlins_)? Even a two-second clip has his rather distinctive
touch...

                        "Simple, candid, crazed and madcap
(quintessentially retarded) our hero fights an
with a PLUCK and SPIRIT that is totally American
                         to the core!!"
