[net.tv] Hill Street Blues Premiere Review

moriarty@fluke.UUCP (Jeff Meyer) (09/30/85)

A fairly good premiere, I thought, though I caught onto the "trick"
intro at the beginning right off (quite a lampoon on all the people
yelling "The series is going to be COMPLETELY changed!" -- made it
look like like it had been). Enjoyed the references to shows from
the past season (Lucy's putting together the horse sculpture for
her ex-adopted son, Daniel's comment to Frank, "Oh, not the badge
again, for God's sake!", Frank quietly refusing the wine, etc.). The
weird humor was in evidence (the dinner -- I do enjoy George
Wyner as Irwin, the D.A.: "Is my car blocking yours?"), as well as
the drama (Yaphet Kotto went a little overboard at times, but
you'll rarely see more raw emotion on the screen). This will
probably be the last time for a while where every Hill Street
member is in evidence; and while I understand Harry Garabaldi will
be back for the next episode, I would have liked a little more of a
rundown on Patsy & Fay (and Ray, though it's obvious he got the
captaincy he wanted).

So, if you missed last week, and are worried about massive
changes, it strikes me that Hill Street seems to be the same fine
show it has always been (even if it isn't trendy to watch it any
longer....).

"From high atop the battered ramparts of truth and
freedom... he took arms against the wicked teeming
minions of of infamy, reprobation, crime,
                         subversion and wanton incontinence!"

                                        Moriarty, aka Jeff Meyer
