Just to add my two cents, I liked the first episode of AMAZING STORIES too.
My one complaint is that with a half-hour show, they weren't able to go 
into much depth of plot or characterization.  As for the grandfather in the
episode, I believe that they were calling him "Opah".  This is (I think)
a Germanic pronoun similar to "Grandpa".  The boy (Lucas Haas) was also in
the movie WITNESS and called his grandfather the same thing there.
