["Mother, where are the angels? I'm scared of the changes"] > The following is actually from HUGH MAHER, U.C. BERKELEY... > Speaking of Sheena Easton, (I love these stream-of-consciousness > ramblings, don't you?) she gets a lot of flack and resentment amongst > Kate Bush fans for "Stealing Away" promotional $$$$$$ away from our > heroine from EMI-AMERICA. Why? Does EMI-America have a quota for how much promotion they will put towards female musicians? Sheena Easton gets a lot of flack from me for being an artistic, emotional, and creative VOID. But then so do lots of so called "musicians". > The video comes from Kate's 1979 Christmas special on the B.B.C. which > actually preceeded the release of NEVER FOR EVER by almost 9 months, > but which included many rough mixes from the album. Really? Nine months! But "Egypt" and "The Wedding List" in the Xmas special are so close to what is on the album. > (Interesting differences in the soundtrack include a different ending > to The Wedding List, and the absence of the breaking glass on the > fairlight at the end of "Babooshka" (Oh, wait...that was from her > appearence on the Dr.Hook Special.) I hadn't noticed these differences. I'll definitely listen for them next time. I love to hear working versions of music I love! Have you heard the version of "Egypt" that Kate did in her Tour of Life concert? I have it on a bootleg. It is completely different than what appears on "Never for Ever". It has a dance beat! And is missing a lot of the tension between the lyrics and the music. It's still incredibly good though! > On another topic: I propose that us Kate Bush fans get our own > net.group!! You don't want to invoke the Wrath of Rich (Rosen), do you? > I mean, the deadheads have one of their own, and us bushies (?) are every > bit as enthusiastic (i.e. fanatical) as them. I'm sure that "every bit" is an understatement, but there are probably a lot more Deadheads than Lionhearts (what an awful term -- but it's better than "Bushies"!) on the net. But if we continue flaming like this (which we should), most people will probably BEG us to move into our own group. But I don't know if I consider having our own group a particularly good idea. Let people use their "n" keys if they are unenlighted! > Yet another topic: How would fellow fans feel about Kate maybe switching > labels, only in the U.S.? Sort of like paul mc cartney, who gets the benefits > of EMI's incredibly great international distribution, combined with the > domestic promotional muscle of Columbia. Lets face it. Capitol records > (and especially EMI-America) are a joke. (is a joke?) I think she should move to either Ralph Records or Recommended Records, because they understand about art and wouldn't screw her. Of course, that would be a disasterous move in terms of commercial success, so maybe it's not such a great idea. > I can't remember when they last had a massive hit on the level of a > Madonna or a Prince or a Bruce Springsteen. On the other hand, if > Kate ever did become that popular, there would be a lot more negative > comments about her in these pages. As it stands now, no one can really > respond negatively because they havn't heard her music. But who would want Kate to be a massive hit on the level of Madonna, etc.! First of all, it would restore my faith in the masses, and then I'd have a lot less left to gripe about. Secondly, Kate's music is way too good to have that type of success in the U.S., so it will never happen. Why not settle for something like the success of the Talking Heads or better yet, the massive cult popularity of Pink Floyd or The Greatful Dead. Kate Bush has that sort of intense following, but it numbers in the thousands rather than in the millions (like with Pink Floyd). I don't know how many people are in The Greatful Dead cult. Maybe it's just the same 50,000 people following them all over the country.... > Anyone have any news about Break-Through? I think that malaise is > setting in fast up there on the plains of Manitoba... The last I heard, they are still planning on putting out another issue sometime soon after the release of Kate Bush's new album. They still respond swiftly to my orders for sheet music and stuff like that, but they are definitely having financial difficulties in making Break-Through pay for itself. This is probably because they have the silly notion that it should be a really slick production physically (which it is -- and which is nice), but that isn't what really matters, though, is it?
