The point here is that HSB does not take place in any one particular
city.  Springfield was clearly chosen to leave the choice unclear.  The
show is even more popular if viewers feel that it could be set in their
city.

For the first 3 years, I was certain it was Buffalo, NY.  One of the chief
writers at that time (now creator of Miami Vice) was a native of Buffalo
and was making UNISTAKABLE references to places that only exist in Buffalo.
Since Anthony Yerkovich no longer writes for HSB, most of the Buffalo
references have disappeared (with the noteable exception of Mulligans',
the after hours bar the precinct gathers at).
