[net.tv] Another minority falsely depicted

doug@terak.UUCP (Doug Pardee) (11/01/85)

I thought that the folks who make TV programs were socially conscious
enough nowadays to be careful in how they depict minorities.

Apparently not, at least as far as witches are concerned. The Halloween
episode of Night Court does get credit for showing the witch as being a
genuine human being, and a nice one at that. But I was very
disappointed when they trotted out the dime-store magic show instead
of showing witchcraft as it really is.

I was also disappointed in the ending. It seemed a bit odd that a show
which doesn't shy away from mixed-race marriage would conclude that a
judge cannot date a witch because it would ruin his career.

It is my opinion (and so far the only one that makes sense) that Night
Court is set in a different world--a parallel earth or fantasy land where:
a.) magic works, b.) there is a Santa Claus, and c.) female public defenders
are always perky blondes.(:-))
