The Twilight Zone episode in question was from Henry Slesar's short story "Examination Day," 1957 (HMH Publishing Co.). I thought it was a faithful adaptation to the spirit of the story, which also appears in "100 Great Science Fiction Short Short Stories" ed. by Asimov et al.
