I have written about these 2 before, separately, but I think the comparison is important. The Mission was a serious and stoic kind of story with little to lead you to expect such an ending (though I admit that I wasn't listening to the priest's speech very closely), while Fine Tuning was delightful and lighthearted all the way through. Yes, from an engineering point of view, the story was a disgrace (it's not even worth going into detail on that!), and it's not too tough to see where they had to cut budgetary corners. And the coincidences were preposterous! Anyway, I hated The Mission like I hated no other hour of TV I've ever seen. On the other hand I loved Fine Tuning. If we had any reason at all to expect the ending of The Mission, it might have been more acceptable. There have been about 10 endings posted to the net that I would have enjoyed more. Fine Tuning was silly from start to finish, so when they lopped on more ridic- ulous stuff, it was OK! I didn't stop smiling for the entire 1/2 hour, and for about 10 minutes into Hitchcock. It was cute (in an acceptable way!), and fun and funny. And THAT made that an Amazing Story, at least to this observer. Anyway, I feel better now that my spleen has been vented.
