[net.tv] Hill Street Blues location

kremen@aero.ARPA (Gary Kremen ) (11/20/85)

I have been reading the recent posting on the location of Hill Street
Blues with interest. I am sure that most of the city views were filmed
in Chicago. For example, the trains shown at the beginning of the led-in
are Chicago and Northwestern commuter trains. The police cars that are
driven around a exactly the same as Chicago police cars, but with the
word Chicago removed and the word "Metro" substituted. Also I believe
there is a Hill Street in Chicago. There are many other shots that I
definitely recognized as Chicago scenery.

Does anyone else out there recognized any of the other locations that
HSB might take place?

[Naw, I don't really believe there's a line-eater.] really believe there's a line-eater.

At this point, we should all be in agreement about this much:
    1. As far as the story line goes, it is a FICTIONAL city.
    2. The opening sequence could not have been shot in San
Francisco, given the El and the snow.

And this is not very controversial:
     3. The street and neighborhood names are drawn from a number
         of sources.

I'd like to add my vote to Gary Kremen's idea that the opening sequence
was shot in Chicago. Besides his observation of the appearance of the
cop cars, and the general views of the city, we can note the diagonal
visibility-striping on the overpasses.

"The Hill" as the name for a rather depressed area of town may have
come from New Haven, CT. Milch and one other among the producer/writers
were Yalies.

Query: Can anyone fill in the words that come over the radio during the
opening credits sequence? I can never make out the middle of the
following: "Robbery in progress, _______________tore and People's Drive."
